The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has postponed all 24 Copa del Rey first-round matches scheduled for Wednesday following a deadly train crash in the province of Toledo.
Two high-speed trains collided near Urda, between Los Yebenes and Urda, on Wednesday morning, killing dozens of people and leaving many others injured. The tragedy prompted the governing body to suspend the scheduled fixtures as a mark of respect for the victims.
Why the RFEF postponed 24 Copa del Rey matches
The RFEF confirmed that the postponement applies to all 24 first-round matches scheduled for Wednesday, alongside other fixtures in competitions organised by the federation.
"The postponement of the 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for this Wednesday, as well as the rest of the matches in the competitions organised by the RFEF, is decreed in solidarity with the victims of the tragic train accident that occurred in the province of Toledo," read the RFEF statement.
"The RFEF will announce the revised tournament schedule and the final times for the postponed matches in the coming days."
The decision affects several Spanish clubs, including Valencia, Celta Vigo, Real Betis and Deportivo Alavés. The federation had not announced revised dates for the postponed fixtures at the time of writing.
Thursday's Copa del Rey matches were expected to go ahead as scheduled, although the situation remained subject to further updates.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are not scheduled to enter the competition until the round of 32, meaning their own Copa del Rey fixtures are not affected by Wednesday's postponements.
