The Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in  Morocco drew to a pulsating close across the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat.

Maddie DiMaria etched her name into the history books as the USA toppled Spain, Japan mounted a second-half comeback to survive a brave Kenya display, Nigeria outclassed Mexico, and China PR relied on penalty shootout heroics to knock out France.

With the quarter-final matchups officially set, Striver.Football recaps all action on the final day of Round of 16 action.

Spain 1–2 USA

In a heavyweight blockbuster on Pitch 4, the USA produced a clinic in box efficiency to eliminate Spain and setup a mouthwatering quarter-final clash with defending champions DPR Korea.

Despite Spain controlling long stretches of early possession, Ciara Crinion's side struck twice in rapid succession before half-time. Deus Stanislaus broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute, spiralling home a lofted ball from Anaiah Williams after a half-cleared corner.

Just three minutes later, tournament sensation Maddie DiMaria dispossessed Iraia Fernandez, drove into the box, and smashed home a ruthless left-footed strike.

The goal marked DiMaria’s 12th goal of Morocco 2026, officially making her the outright top scorer in a single FIFA women's tournament history (surpassing Canada icon Christine Sinclair).

Spain pulled one back in the 71st minute when Vera Molina’s edge-of-the-box shot deflected in off Meila Brewer, but Player of the Match Loradana Paletta anchored a stubborn US rearguard to hold on for a famous victory.

Japan 3–1 Kenya

Japan continued their flawless record of reaching at least the quarter-finals in every single edition of the U-17 World Cup, but they were forced to work for it by a spirited Kenyan side.

On Pitch 3, Kenya stunned the Asian champions in the 29th minute against the run of play when Brenda Achieng broke clean through on goal and slotted past Kou Kadowaki. Achieng's strike made Kenya the first team to score against Japan in the entire tournament.

However, Japan responded with clinical tactical adjustments. Mei Hanashiro smashed home a deflected long-range effort seven minutes later to equalize, before Player of the Match Nanami Kurita pounced on a loose ball in the 59th minute to give Japan the lead.

Asuka Tanaka put the tie beyond doubt in the 75th minute to set up a quarter-final clash with Ghana.

Nigeria 2–1 Mexico

A commanding display from Nigeria on Pitch 2 secured a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Mexico and booked a date with Venezuela in the last eight.

After surviving early pressure from Mexico captain Citlalli Reyes, Nigeria took control in the 40th minute when Player of the Match Oluebube Umejiaku seized on Esther Stephen’s searching long ball and smashed a finish into the top corner.

The Flamingos doubled their cushion in the 71st minute through Mary Dunstan, who hammered home after Kanyinsola Yusuf’s delivery was only half-cleared.

Emily Delgado pulled a late consolation goal back for Mexico deep into stoppage time (90+10'), but Nigeria comfortably closed out the tie.

China PR 0–0 France

China PR reached the U-17 Women's World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history after prevailing in a tense penalty shootout on Pitch 1.

Following 90 minutes of tight tactical battles—which produced the first goalless draw of Morocco 2026—goalkeeper Niu Ziqi took center stage. Having kept France at bay during regulation time with brilliant stops from Maelys Ane, Player of the Match Niu saved spot-kicks from Lea Motyka and Lisa Mabilon to send China PR through to face Brazil.
