Everton have held early discussions over a potential move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, according to the club's former CEO Keith Wyness.

Rashford, 28, has struggled to make an impact since returning to Old Trafford following his loan spell at Barcelona last season. He has made eight appearances for United in all competitions in 2026-27 without scoring or providing an assist.

In the Premier League, he has featured six times, starting four matches and playing 356 minutes. A potential move would depend on the financial terms, with Rashford’s wages likely to be a major obstacle.

Wyness told Football Insider that the possibility of signing Rashford is "definitely" being talked about at Everton. He suggested that a January move could be on the cards.

Why David Moyes Could Appeal to Marcus Rashford

Rashford’s previous comments about David Moyes provide some context to Everton’s reported interest in the forward. Speaking to ESPN in 2019, he recalled training with Manchester United’s first team as a teenager while Moyes was in charge.

“It was under David Moyes, and it was a group of us that went over,” Rashford said. “It was an amazing feeling. I remember the training session: We didn’t actually touch the ball. We were just doing shape and stuff like that. But then we go back to our own age group, and what you learned from that little 15 or 20 minutes is priceless as a young academy player.”

He also explained how those early experiences helped him prepare for senior football.

“Those moments really do start to add up, and when you start training with them more regularly, you pick up more things, more things to learn from. That’s how you become a first-team player,” Rashford added.

Can Moyes Revive Rashford?

Moyes has previously helped Manchester United players get back to form away from Old Trafford. Jesse Lingard’s loan move to West Ham in January 2021 is one example.

Lingard scored nine goals in 16 Premier League appearances during his spell at the London club. He also registered nine goal contributions through assists. After the loan ended, he thanked Moyes for giving him the chance to prove himself.

“Thank you to the gaffer [David Moyes] who had the belief in bringing me here,” Lingard said.

Jack Grealish offers another example of a player finding form at Everton. The winger joined on a season-long loan from Manchester City in 2025 and made an immediate impact, recording four assists in his first three Premier League games.

His performances earned him the division’s Player of the Month award for August. Moyes was pleased with Grealish’s response, as the winger had arrived looking to get his career back on track.

“Everybody knows he’s back again… He’s come back with the right mindset to produce, and he has produced for us,” Moyes said.

However, a foot injury in January brought Grealish’s campaign to an early end. His performances at the start of the season showed what he could offer Everton, but the injury stopped him from maintaining that form for the rest of the campaign.

Lingard and Grealish give Everton reasons to consider Moyes’ experience in helping attacking players regain confidence. Rashford’s situation is different, though, and any improvement would depend on his form, fitness and willingness to take on a new challenge.

What Could Stop the Move?

Rashford’s wages are likely to be the biggest obstacle. He reportedly earns £325,000 a week at Manchester United and is under contract until 2028. Everton would need to agree on a financial arrangement that works for them, potentially with United paying part of his wages if a loan goes ahead.

The type of deal is also unclear. A loan with an option to buy would give Everton more flexibility, while a permanent transfer would require a bigger financial commitment.

Rashford’s recent performances are another factor. He recorded 14 goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona last season, showing what he can offer in attack.

However, he has yet to register a goal or assist since returning to United, which is raising questions about whether a move could help him find his form again. Everton would be getting a forward with proven quality who could add more options in attack.

The challenge is agreeing on a deal that fits their budget and gives Rashford a chance to get his season back on track.
