Debutants Cape Verde Frustrate Spain

IMAGO

In Monterrey, the script for Spain vs Cabo Verde seemed written before kickoff. Spain, the elegant European champions, were expected to dance through the tournament debutants.

But Cape Verde reaped rewards for their choice to field an experienced line up, as they played the oldest starting XI for a World Cup debut in history, averaging over 31 years of age.

Although Spain strung 734 passes and unleashed 27 shots. Yet, the ball refused to cross the line. Cape Verde’s 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha managed to rack up seven saves.

La Roja’s frustration grew so intense that forward Mikel Oyarzabal spent his first 30 minutes chasing shadows, becoming the first player since 1966 to play that long without recording a single touch.

Not even the introduction of 18-year-old maverick Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest European to ever feature in two major tournaments could make them break the deadlock. When the final whistle blew, the veteran Blue Sharks celebrated a legendary 0-0 standstill.

Salah Marks Birthday With Record-Breaking World Cup Assist

IMAGO

In Seattle, Egypt took on Belgium on their return to the World Cup stage after an eight-year absence, settling for a 1-1 draw.

Celebrating his 34th birthday, Mohamed Salah carved open the Belgian defense in the 19th minute. With a perfectly weighted pass, he set up Emam Ashour for a thunderous opening goal, making Salah the oldest African player to register a World Cup assist since Roger Milla in 1990.

Meanwhile, Egypt also handed Hamza Abdelkarim his World Cup debut, as the Barcelona B wonderkid came off the bench in the 75th minute to become the Pharaohs’ youngest-ever World Cup player at just 18.

Belgium struggled to break down Egypt especially during the first half, which forced Rudi Garcia to turn to his bench in the second half, calling upon the raw power of Romelu Lukaku, who gave them more presence upfront.

Within 22 seconds of coming on, his immense physical presence pinned back the Egyptian defense and forced an own goal from Mohamed Hany.

Muslera Error Helps Saudi Arabia Earn Valuable Point

In Miami, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay locked horns under the stifling heat, which wore down both squads, and as fatigue crept in, the goalkeepers took center stage for the wrong reasons.

In the 41st minute, Uruguay’s veteran keeper Fernando Muslera completely misjudged a floated ball from a corner kick. Seizing the blunder, Saudi center-back Abdulelah al-Amri poked the ball into the net, sending the Saudi fans into a frenzy.

Uruguay fought back tenaciously, dominating possession until Maxi Araujo finally found the equaliser.

Brave Iran Fight Back

IMAGO

The final drama of the day unfolded in a breathless encounter between Iran and New Zealand.

The All Whites caught Iran cold just seven minutes into the match when Elijah struck a breathtaking volley into the back of the net. New Zealand doubled their advantage later in the match, smelling a historic World Cup victory.

But Iran refused to be buried. Team Melli stormed back as Mohammad Mohebbi pulled one back with a clinical finish before Ramin Rezaeian capped off a brilliant team move to level the score.

New Zealand pushed again in the dying minutes, but Iran’s defense held firm, locking in a pulsating 2-2 draw.
