Former Manchester City midfielder David Silva has grabbed headlines in Hong Kong after a goalscoring debut for his new team in Hong Kong.

The 40-year-old featured for Supreme Sha Tin in their league meeting with Hong Kong Rangers, opening the scoring in the game which ended 1-1.

Silva signed a short-term deal with the Hong Kong Premier League side three years after he last kicked a ball for Real Sociedad.

Silva rolls back the years for Supreme Sha Tin

David Silva was named in the starting line-up for the game against Hong Kong Rangers, as Supreme Sha Tin sought to claim all three points in the encounter.

The former Spain international started in an attacking midfield role wearing the number 21 shirt which he was known with during his time in Europe.

In front of a sellout crowd of 4,593 supporters at the Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground, he got a chance to open the scoring when substitute Li Wing-ho was adjudged to have handled a cross from Sha Tin star Sergio Chiu Ching-yu.

Silva was all smiles as he received the ball from teammate James Scott to take the penalty, and the Spaniard stroked his effort into the bottom right corner, sending goalkeeper Yip Ka-yu the wrong way to open the scoring.

The attacking midfielder thought he could last for 90 minutes as coach Tom Ballantyne revealed, but as the game opened up more, he found himself dropping deeper as his legs felt the strain more.

Silva eventually came off in the 84th minute, with 24-year-old defender Lai Hoi-to taking his place for the final minutes of the encounter.

The Player of the Match award was given to Silva after his impressive outing, as he gave the fans a glimpse of what he will bring to their league potentially for the rest of the season.

Supreme Sha Tin drop points in Premier League clash

David Silva's debut for Supreme Sha Tin was a bit of a party for his side, but they were unable to fully celebrate the occasion, as their opponents put on a dogged showing.

The Spaniard scored the opener just four minutes shy of the hour mark, but Hong Kong Rangers got a goal of their own in the 66th minute.

Yakubu Nassam Ibrahim fired a precise finish beyond Sha Tin goalkeeper Bryan Lau Wai-hon to ensure that his side shared the points.

There was more headache for Sha Tin in the closing stages, as defender Maxwell Ansah was sent off for picking up a pair of bookings in three minutes.

Scott nearly secured the win late in the game, only for his effort from range to swerve narrowly wide.

The draw meant that Sha Tin remained in ninth place out of 12 teams in the league after their game.
