Tottenham Hotspur picked up only their second win of the season, and it came at the expense of London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Spurs dominated the encounter from start to finish, and pundit Gary Neville explained exactly how they managed to subdue their hosts in West London.

Xabi Alonso's side faced a rude shock from Tottenham, who picked up only their second win at Stamford Bridge since 1990 and their first since 2018.

The game ended 2-0 thanks to a pair of second half goals, as Alonso lost a home game for the first time as Chelsea boss.

The Blues finished the game with just 32% of the ball and completed 215 passes, less than half of Tottenham's pass tally of 554.

Neville pinpoints Tottenham midfield dominance over Chelsea

Former Manchester United star Neville was on commentary duty with Sky Sports when he pointed out the Roberto De Zerbi's side were dominant because of their midfield play.

He singled out the multiple instances of James Maddison dropping deeper to link play with his central midfielders as they key factor in Spurs' dominant showing.

"Tottenham outplayed Chelsea, Spurs were brilliant. None of us expected that today, after 10, 15 mins their confidence grew. James Maddison was part of that. Spurs just dominated especially in midfield where they've invested so heavily, that felt like Robert De Zerbi's project coming to life. A bad day for Chelsea," he said.

Neville pointed out that De Zerbi's expensive midfield acquisitions came to the fore in the game, with both Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes putting on brilliant shifts in the middle of the park.

Signed in a £100 million deal from Newcastle United, Tonali covered the most distance of any player in the game, while also winning 62% of his ground duels and recovering the ball on seven occasions.

Beside him, £85 million man Fernandes recorded the most touches in the game and had the most defensive contributions, while also winning 50% of his ground duels.

As Neville rightly pointed out, Maddison often dropped into the middle third to provide a passing option and create a numerical mismatch against Chelsea's midfield duo of Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson.

After his enforced withdrawal in the 51st minute, his replacement Conor Gallagher continued to occupy the same positions, ensuring that they could play through the Blues with relative ease.

Tottenham match historic date with win over Chelsea

Tottenham fans have not celebrated many wins at Stamford Bridge over the years, with the West London venue proving time and again to be a tough place for them.

They managed to break the jinx with a brilliant performance on Saturday (October 24th), restricting their opponents to a grand total of zero big chances created.

Spurs went ahead when Chelsea's 21-year-old goalkeeper Mike Penders punched the ball into his own net when a corner-kick was swung into the box in the second half.

Shortly after the opening goal, Cole Palmer received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

A second goal followed shortly afterward, with Mathys Tel running half the length of the pitch before rifling home from outside the box.

Tottenham won at Stamford Bridge without conceding for the first time in 40 years, a run that dates back to 1986.
