Kieran Trippier was set to sign for Wolves following the expiration of his Newcastle United contract. One key factor for his arrival to the Midlands was their manager Rob Edwards. However in a shocking turn of events, the club have sacked Edwards with Cesar Peixoto set to take charge.
How Wolves Changed Course in Just 12 Hours
Wolves confirmed they had parted company with Rob Edwards at midday on the 11th June and by half time of the opening World Cup game between Mexico and South Africa an X post by journalist @SportsPeteO added fuel to the Wolves fire.
"Understand Kieran Trippier is considering cancelling his agreement with Wolves as he is angry at the sacking of manager Rob Edwards feeling he has misled by the club. Trippier’s deal at Wolves does not kick in until July 1st after leaving Newcastle as a free agent."
In a mere 12 hours, Wolves parted company with their manager despite resigning star midfielder Andre, despite Premier League interest, and signing veteran England international Trippier.
With over two and a half weeks until Trippier officially signs for Wolves, a Maxx Crosby and Ravens collapsed trade situation could occur in the World's game.
Rob Edwards Played a Key Role in Bringing Trippier to Wolves
Upon the signing of Trippier, then manager Rob Edwards stated “When I met him, I said, ‘I want you to be our first signing’, and I think that sets out what we’re trying to do."
An implication that it was Rob Edwards that was a huge pull for Trippier, which ultimately helped get the deal across the line.
Why Trippier Chose Wolves Over Other Offers
As per Trippier's welcoming interview he explained why it was Wolves that he chose as his next destination.
“I had a good chat with the manager, and what struck me first was how passionate he was for helping the club move forward to get out of the Championship next season. You just have a feeling straight away and I felt that chemistry straight away with the manager."
It was clear that a big reason for signing for Wolves were the conversations with the former manager that helped leverage the move down south for the former Athletico Madrid full back.
How impactful is this for Wolves?
Just over 24 hours after posting a video to X showing Trippier signing the contract, the news has broke that it may be all for nothing.
With this becoming such a dramatic scenario, it sends a message to future transfer targets about the board that may become a deterrent in their bid to gain immediate promotion back to the Premier League.
Coupled along the bad public image for the club, the summer window may look unprecedented for Wolves.
What's next?
Wolves are yet to release a public statement in regards to Trippier's contract cancellation but with just over two weeks until the contract becomes official, news can be expected soon.
