Manchester United’s search for consistency has once again raised questions about the direction of the club, with pressure mounting on Michael Carrick following a difficult start to the season.
The Red Devils have struggled to find the performances needed to match their ambitions, leaving supporters questioning whether another change in the dugout would address the problems at Old Trafford.
Amid the growing uncertainty, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has offered his view on what United should do next, identifying a manager he believes could help restore the club’s identity.
Mikel John Obi names Unai Emery as his choice for Manchester United
Mikel believes Unai Emery would be the right appointment for Manchester United, but only if the club were prepared to give the Aston Villa manager the authority and financial backing needed to implement his ideas.
Speaking on his Obi One podcast, the former Nigeria international outlined the conditions he believes would be necessary to make the appointment work.
“I would go for Unai Emery. I don’t think he leaves [Aston Villa] but listen, if you give him the f***ing keys. If you give him an open chequebook and say: ‘Listen, Unai, we don’t want to go down this route anymore, we’re tired, the fans are sick and tired of what’s happening at the football club. We want to press the reset button and believe you are the man.’”
The recommendation comes as United face renewed scrutiny over their managerial direction and the decisions being made behind the scenes. Reports have indicated that Carrick’s position is under consideration following the team’s recent results, with potential alternatives being discussed.
However, Mikel’s argument is about more than simply replacing the manager. His comments point towards a wider reset, with United needing to establish a clear direction and give their chosen coach the support required to deliver it.
Could Manchester United persuade Unai Emery to leave Aston Villa?
Emery would represent an experienced option for a club seeking to rebuild its standing in English and European football.
Since arriving at Aston Villa in October 2022, the Spaniard has transformed the club’s fortunes. He guided Villa to fourth place in the Premier League in 2023/24, securing Champions League qualification for the first time in the club’s history, before leading them to the Champions League quarter-finals the following season.
His European pedigree is another major attraction. Emery has won the UEFA Europa League five times as a manager, including with Sevilla, Villarreal and Aston Villa, making him the competition’s most successful coach. UEFA’s review of Emery’s record highlights the scale of that achievement.
Those credentials help explain why Mikel believes Emery could succeed at Old Trafford. Yet convincing him to leave Villa would be a significant challenge, particularly given the progress he has made there and the responsibility he has been afforded.
Manchester United would also need to consider whether their recruitment structure and long-term planning could provide the environment Emery would require. Financial backing alone would not guarantee success without a shared vision between the manager and the club’s leadership.
Mikel’s proposal therefore presents United with a bigger question than who should occupy the dugout. If the club decide to make another managerial change, they must be prepared to commit to a clear strategy and give their next appointment the tools to carry it out.
