Real Madrid are keeping an eye on Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki after his impressive start at Villa Park. However, the reported interest has not yet led to a formal approach or transfer talks.
TEAMtalk reports that Madrid are among several European clubs tracking the Japan international as they look at their long-term goalkeeping options.
The club is also working towards extending Thibaut Courtois's contract, suggesting their interest in Suzuki is more about planning for the future than making an immediate change in goal.
The 24-year-old joined Aston Villa from Parma in August and has quickly settled under Unai Emery. His performances in the Premier League and Champions League have caught the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs.
Why Real Madrid Are Monitoring Zion Suzuki
Suzuki joined Aston Villa from Parma on 19 August 2026 after the club identified him as a possible replacement for Emiliano Martínez. The initial fee was reported to be €30m, with another €5m available in performance-related bonuses.
He signed a five-year deal running until 2031. The Japanese goalkeeper has made eight Premier League appearances, keeping two clean sheets, making 29 saves and conceding nine goals.
He has also played every minute of Villa's four Champions League matches, making 19 saves, keeping one clean sheet and recording an 81.5% passing accuracy.
TEAMtalk points to Suzuki's ability to play as a sweeper-keeper and distribute the ball well as reasons he is attracting interest. His range of passing helps Villa build from the back, giving Emery another way to move the ball forward.
Madrid's interest comes as they consider their long-term plans in goal. Reports say that the Spanish club is preparing to offer Courtois a new contract while continuing to watch potential successors.
Fabrizio Romano reported in October that Madrid and Courtois had reached an agreement in principle over a one-year extension through 2028. However, Courtois said on 22 October that they were still discussing the final details, meaning the deal had not yet been officially completed.
The two reports do not necessarily conflict. Courtois remains Madrid's first-choice goalkeeper, while keeping tabs on Suzuki would give the club a chance to assess possible successors without rushing into a decision.
Why an Aston Villa to Real Madrid Move Is Difficult
Villa are in a strong position after signing Suzuki on a five-year contract. The club is under no pressure to consider offers and sees the Japanese goalkeeper as an important part of their long-term plans. His deal runs until 2031, giving Villa plenty of control over his future.
Having paid a significant fee to bring him from Parma, they have little reason to sell him after just a few months at the club. Paris Saint-Germain and several Premier League clubs are monitoring Suzuki alongside Real Madrid.
However, none of the reported interest has led to a confirmed bid or formal negotiations.
For Madrid, any move would depend on how they plan for Courtois's eventual departure. If the Belgian stays through 2028, there is less need to bring in another goalkeeper straight away.
Suzuki's early performances have made him a name worth watching, but a departure from Aston Villa is far from certain.
Madrid would need to decide when to address their long-term goalkeeping plans, while Villa would have to be convinced to let go of a player they only recently signed.
