Dominik Szoboszlai has revealed he is dreaming of wearing the captain’s armband at Liverpool. 

Before the start of the season, Reds coach Antonio Iraola named Szoboszlai, Joe Gomez and Alisson Becker as deputies to skipper Virgil van Dijk. 

Szoboszlai who joined the Merseyside outfit in 2023, recently signed a new contract that keeps him at the club until 2031 and he also leads the Hungary national team as captain.

SZOBOSZLAI WILL BE HAPPY TO BE LIVERPOOL CAPTAIN 

The 25-year-old does not shy away from responsibilities despite spending three years at Anfield. 

Szoboszlai has shown his leadership qualities on the pitch this season, in addition to his role in the middle of the park.

He salvaged a point for Liverpool in their Premier League opener with a last-minute penalty against Newcastle United followed by the equaliser as the Reds’ came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League. 

On Tuesday, Szoboszlai sealed Liverpool’s passage to the Carabao Cup fourth round with a screamer in their 3-1 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur.

When asked about Liverpool’s captaincy following Van Dijk’s remarks about his leadership, Szoboszlai told Sky Sports: “It is different when he says it, I don’t have to say it. 

“Of course, if they put you as a Liverpool captain, I think there’s nothing bigger than that and I’m happy to take it. 

He added: “I want to be here for as long as I can help the team to win as much as possible because we are able to do it. 

“I know and I really believe it. The words are sometimes big now, we have to act as well.”

SZOBOSZLAI ASSUMES MORE RESPONSIBILITIES UNDER IRAOLA

Since the appointment of Iraola as Arne Slot’s successor, Szoboszlai has taken more leadership positions at Liverpool.

The 25-year-old first wore the captain’s armband during Liverpool’s pre-season friendly games against Wrexham and Sunderland in the United States.

The Hungary star is yet to wear the captain’s armband in a competitive game but he is expected to play a leading role as the Reds aim to challenge for silverware this campaign.
