The health of head coach Vincent Kompany has been a source of worry for Bayern Munich after he collapsed in the club's training facility last week.
The Belgian tactician was hospitalised following the incident and has only now been discharged from the hospital to continue to receive care at home.
Five days after the frightening training ground collapse while observing the club's reserve squad, the 40-year-old Bayern Munich boss was diagnosed with meningeal irritation resulting from a severe viral infection.
Regardless of the diagnosis, the club's plan is to place him on a compulsory rest period after concerns were raised over his intense work schedule.
Medical diagnosis revealed: Understanding meningeal irritation
Following nearly a week of medical observation and testing at a Munich hospital, Bayern Munich's board member for sport, Max Eberl, provided a reassuring update ahead of the club's DFB-Pokal fixture.
According to Eberl, doctors diagnosed Kompany's sudden collapse as meningeal irritation and nothing more sinister.
The condition is basically an inflammation or irritation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, triggered by a lingering viral infection that the Belgian coach had been battling.
"They have found what it is. It's meningeal irritation that caused this incident last Friday. I'm very, very sure that he will soon be back on the sideline at 100%," he said.
Bayern Munich and their fans will be relieved by the nature of Kompany's diagnosis, with some reports having claimed that he suffered from a heart condition.
Learning that the incident was purely medical rather than pressure-induced will provide some comfort to Eberl and the players at the club, and Kompany will have time off to see to his health.
Recovery timeline and interim staff coverage
While Kompany's discharge is the best possible news for everyone associated with the club, Bayern Munich officials have stressed that no rigid timescale has been set for his return to the technical area.
With the team performing as well as is expected of them, there will be no rush for Kompany to return to the dugout.
The health and full recovery of the head coach remain the absolute priority, meaning assistant coaches Aaron Danks, Floribert N'Galula, Daniel Fradley, and Rene Maric will continue to oversee first-team training and matchday duties until Kompany receives clearance to resume work.
The quartet were in charge as the Bavarian giants eased past Magdeburg in their DFB Pokal meeting at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening, winning 6-1 against the second-tier side.
They will also likely remain in charge for Saturday's top-of-the-table clash with rivals Borussia Dortmund, also at the Allianz Arena.
