Day Five at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Rabat served as an masterclass in the razor-thin margins of tournament football.

On one end of the spectrum, host nation Morocco demonstrated elite tactical maturity by edging North African rivals Algeria 1-0 to become the first team to mathematically seal a spot in the quarter-finals.

On the other end, Kenya  suffered an agonizing 1-0 defeat to Senegal in a second half dominated by the East Africans that will be remembered for three separate strikes rattling off the woodwork.

Striver.Football breaks down the five core storylines, player displays, and tactical lessons from a dramatic Day Five in Rabat.

4. Are Morocco Now The WAFCON 2026 Favourites?

After dismantling Kenya 4-0 on opening night with relentless wide overloads, the Atlas Lionesses showed a completely different side to their identity against Algeria.

Faced with a disciplined, low-block defensive unit, Morocco exercised extreme patience, controlling the tempo and maintaining sustained possession inside Zone 14.

The tactical lock was finally broken in the 77th minute when Sanaa Massoudi pounced on a spatial gap to fire home the winner, sparking wild celebrations across Rabat.

Morocco has now proven it can win in multiple ways, either through high-velocity wing play or methodical, low-block siege warfare.

3. Kenya Left To Rue Missed Chances

Following a sluggish opening half that allowed Senegal’s Seynabou Mbengue to score in the 35th minute off a fine pass from Bineta Seck, Kenya coach Beldine Odemba restructured her frontline after the interval. What followed was a furious, continuous assault on the Senegalese goal.

In the 67th minute, Euphraiser Shilwatso unleashed a thunderous strike that crashed off the crossbar, with Terry Engesha’s immediate rebound hitting the post.

The agony peaked in the 77th minute when Engesha broke clear once more, sliding a low shot past goalkeeper Khady Faye, only to see it hit the inside of the post for a third time. Captain Mwanalima Jereko's follow-up was miraculously blocked on the goal line.

2. Lilian Awuor Continues To Shine For Kenya

Despite back-to-back defeats, Kenyan goalkeeper Lilian Awuor has cemented her reputation as one of the tournament's premier shot-stoppers.

She kept Kenya within striking distance during a difficult first half, executing point-blank saves and organizing a defensive line that was heavily tested. Mbengue's winning strike was an unstoppable finish that gave Awuor zero chance.

1. Senegal’s Clinical Edge Revives Quarter-Final Hopes

Senegal coach Mame Moussa Cisse opined pre-match that clinical execution would decide Group A survival, and his team delivered.

While forced to absorb immense pressure in the second half, the Teranga Lionesses capitalised ruthlessly on their single clear chance on 35 minutes, securing three vital points ahead of their final group test against Morocco.
