He is 16 years old, still in school, and now the youngest-ever nominee for the PFA Young Player of the Year award since its introduction in 1973-74.

Dowman is already achieving milestones that most players do not reach until years into their professional careers.

How Dowman Became Arsenal's Most Exciting Young Player

The 2025/26 season began with a brief appearance off the bench against Leeds United. Dowman won a penalty that helped Arsenal on their way to a 5-0 victory.

In November, at just 15 years and 308 days old, Dowman entered as a substitute in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Slavia Prague in the Champions League, becoming the youngest player ever to appear in the competition.

In doing so, he broke the previous record held by Borussia Dortmund's Youssoufa Moukoko.

Mikel Arteta's response said everything: "You can't teach it — you either have it, or you don't." Whatever is written on the passport, if you can adapt and perform at this level, that’s what matters.”

The Goal That Made Premier League History

March 14, 2026. Arsenal at home against Everton. With the match still goalless 0-0 in the closing stages, Mikel Arteta introduced Dowman from the bench.

According to the teenager, the manager's message was simple: "Go and do your thing and win us the game."

Dowman made an immediate impact. After Jordan Pickford went forward for a late corner, Arsenal won possession and launched a counterattack. Dowman gathered the ball, carried it past two defenders, and scored into an unguarded net from inside his own half.

Earlier in the move, he had also been involved in the attack that led to Viktor Gyokeres opening the scoring. In the space of a few minutes, Dowman contributed to both goals as Arsenal secured a crucial victory.

Aged 16 years and 73 days, he became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, surpassing the record set by James Vaughan in 2005.

Other players near the top of that list include James Milner, Wayne Rooney, and Cesc Fabregas, placing Dowman's achievement in notable company.

Why Dowman's Impact Matters More Than His Minutes

Dowman made only six Premier League appearances this season, totalling just 153 minutes on the pitch.

A standard Premier League substitute appearance lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. He barely accumulated enough time to equal five of those.

Yet it was still enough for his name to appear on the PFA Young Player of the Year shortlist, a list voted for by fellow players.

The PFA Young Player of the Year is not chosen by journalists or a panel. It is voted for by PFA members, the players themselves.

The shortlist alongside him includes Rayan Cherki, who joined Manchester City from Lyon and contributed across a title-challenging campaign, Nico O'Reilly, also of City, Kobbie Mainoo of Manchester United, Rio Ngumoha of Liverpool, and Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi.

All of them had longer, more consistent seasons.

Dowman’s nomination isn’t really about volume. It comes down to two moments, a cross and a goal in the space of an eight-minute cameo, that changed a match and left a lasting impression.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Manchester on 25 August.

Whether he wins or not, the nomination itself already says something about how he’s viewed within the game: not just as a prospect, but as a player people are already taking seriously.
