It hasn't been perfect, but it also hasn't been as lackluster as a majority of last season was for Liverpool under Arnet Slot. Andoni Iraola seems to have found the right balance in the team and has provided a level of stability that evaded the Reds last season in a season where they were rather lucky to have finished in fifth place and qualify for the Champions League.
Heading into this weekend's massive clash against Arsenal in the Premier League, Liverpool have won a total of eight matches across all competitions, have drawn three, and only suffered one deafeat - the 3-0 loss to Manchester City after the last international break.
For Iraola, he's seemingly provided a spark of rejuvenation into some of the players that inexplicably underperformed last season, one of which being Argentine Alexis Mac Allister. His contract at Liverpool has been the subject of discussion in recent weeks as he had spoken about the situation ahead of Liverpool's Champions League win over Atletico Madrid earlier this season. At the time, he had said that he wasn't happy when the club weren't ready to give him a new deal over the summer, and ironically enough, he's been in decent form from that point on, having started by scoring the winner against Diego Simeone's side at Anfield.
Both Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch signed contract extensions for Liverpool over the summer, so Mac Allister is of the mindset that he very much deserves one, too. His performances on the main over the past couple of seasons certainly merit the discussion and he's getting closer to his top form as the weeks progress this season. He's tallied four goals and one assist from a total of thirteen appearances across all competitions and has been a consistent presence in Liverpool's midfield.
Mac Allister On His Liverpool Future
In a recent interview with Sky Sports; Natale Gedra, Mac Allister touched upon his future with Liverpool and said that the situation really hasn't changed since he voiced his concern earlier this season.
"Not much to be honest. The situation didn't change," Mac Allister replied when Gedra asked what the midfielder is able to share about updates on a potential contract extension.
"There's a new sporting director, there's a new ownership coming into the club, so everything can happen, and we will see - whether it's this season or next season - we will see what happens. But, right now, I'm just enjoying my football, enjoying playing for this amazing club that is one of the best in the world and...we will in the future what happens," the 2022 World Cup winner continued.
Just a Matter Of Time?
As things currently stand, Mac Allister's current contract at Liverpool runs through June 2028, so there's certainly still time to get an extension agreed upon with the club. However, by that same token, it's a crucial period as he's getting closer to the final year of his current contract as that's typically one of the last period's where clubs try to sell players to get decent fees for them.
It's also been rumored in the past that the Argentine has a release clause in his contract worth somewhere in the ballpark of £60 million, but that's never been substantiated by any credible outlets.
Nonetheless, while there's just under two years left on his contract, as Mac Allister alluded to, hopefully logistical and personnel changes amongst Liverpool's hierarchy don't get in the way of a new deal getting done. Mac Allister was a key part of Liverpool winning the 2024/25 Premier League title and is getting back to his best form under Iraola, so it could prove to be a bad decision for the club if they don't wind up giving him a new deal.
