Real Madrid are reportedly exploring a move for Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel, with the teenager's representatives reportedly working towards a January exit from Old Trafford.
TEAMtalk reports that agent Ali Barat is leading efforts to find the 16-year-old a new club after his previous attempts to leave failed to produce an agreement. Gabriel and his family are understood to favour a move away from England, with Spain emerging as their preferred destination.
Ryan Giggs has previously described the teenager as a "generational talent", while his hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut has further raised his profile. However, no agreement has been reached, and several European clubs remain interested.
Why Real Madrid are ahead in the race for JJ Gabriel
According to TEAMtalk, sources in Madrid believe discussions are progressing positively, although important details still need to be resolved before a deal can be completed. Real Madrid and Barcelona are seen as the leading contenders.
PSG, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have also held positive discussions with those close to the player. However, Fabrizio Romano said on 2 November that PSG have shifted their focus to other targets, leaving Real Madrid in a stronger position.
"Real Madrid remain in the leading seat for JJ Gabriel," he said on his YouTube channel, adding that other clubs could still enter the race.
Gabriel's situation at United began to deteriorate in September when he requested the cancellation of his academy registration. The request came shortly after he was left out of Michael Carrick's senior squad for the Champions League meeting with Sabah FK on 10 September.
That same day, Gabriel scored a hat-trick in United's 5-0 UEFA Youth League victory over Sabah, becoming the club's youngest player to score a hat-trick in the competition.
United rejected his request and held talks with Gabriel and his representatives, but the discussions have reportedly failed to change his position. BBC Sport reported that his omission from the senior squad was a major factor in his decision to leave.
He has since been training in Spain with private coach Jack Hunter. Carrick acknowledged the ongoing discussions at a press conference on 17 September, saying:
"As a club, for sure, we're all involved in those conversations."
Gabriel's reputation had already attracted significant attention before the dispute. Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Giggs praised his ability and urged United to keep him close to the first team rather than send him out on loan.
"In my view, JJ is sort of a generational talent," Giggs said, as reported by The Washington Post.
What stands between Gabriel and a move to Spain
Gabriel's age and registration status are central to any potential transfer. He turned 16 on 6 October and is eligible to sign a scholarship agreement, although he cannot sign a professional contract until he turns 17.
FIFA generally restricts international transfers involving players under 18, but an exception allows certain moves involving players aged 16 to 18 within the EU or EEA, provided strict conditions are met.
TEAMtalk reports that Gabriel's Irish nationality, through his father Joe O'Cearuill, a former Republic of Ireland international, could make him eligible for that exception. Any move would still require FIFA approval.
His Manchester United registration is another important factor. Under Premier League academy rules, a player's registration can be cancelled by agreement between the club, player and parent or carer.
If they cannot reach an agreement, any party can request a binding decision from the Premier League. United have also offered Gabriel a scholarship contract in an effort to keep him at the club.
The Guardian reported that United could receive around £350,000 in compensation if he moves abroad, while a transfer to another English club would involve a separate compensation process.
