Eight months after being sacked by Nottingham Forest, Ange Postecoglou is back in football, and his first challenge is managing Cristiano Ronaldo.
Al Nassr confirmed the appointment of the 60-year-old Australian on a two-year contract via the club's official social media channels on Friday, July 3.
Announcing the appointment, the club wrote: "Mr. Ange Postecoglou as coach of the first football team at Al Nassr Club. And that with a contract extending for two seasons. Our best wishes for success to him and his staff in their journey with the Global Club."
Postecoglou replaces Jorge Jesus, who led Al Nassr to the Saudi Pro League title last season before departing at the end of his contract. The Australian inherits a squad featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, Joao Felix, and Kingsley Coman.
Why Al Nassr Chose Ange Postecoglou
Postecoglou previously managed Tottenham Hotspur, guiding them to Europa League glory in 2025 before being sacked just two weeks later after a 17th-place finish in the Premier League. What followed was even worse.
A miserable spell at Nottingham Forest lasted just 39 days, with the Australian failing to win any of his eight matches in charge and losing six of them. Before his spells in the Premier League, Postecoglou built a formidable reputation elsewhere.
At Celtic, he won five trophies in two seasons, including a domestic treble. Earlier in his career, he claimed league titles with Brisbane Roar and Yokohama F. Marinos before managing Australia at the 2014 World Cup and leading the Socceroos to the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, the country's greatest achievement in men's international football.
The appointment ends speculation linking Postecoglou with the vacant Scotland manager's role following Steve Clarke's departure, as well as reported interest from Kazakhstan. Instead, he has chosen Saudi Arabia, where the expectation is clear: Al Nassr wants to retain the Saudi Pro League title.
Postecoglou Begins a New Era Alongside Cristiano Ronaldo
Postecoglou's first competitive fixture will be the King of Cups Champions Clash against Diriyah on August 16. It will provide an immediate test for a manager looking to rebuild his reputation after difficult spells at Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.
One of the biggest milestones awaiting Postecoglou is the possibility of overseeing Ronaldo's pursuit of 1,000 career goals. After converting a penalty for Portugal against Croatia in the World Cup Round of 32, Ronaldo has 976 career goals.
Twenty-four more across a two-year contract is well within reach for a striker who scored consistently throughout Al Nassr's title-winning campaign last season.
Among Postecoglou's managerial rivals in the Saudi Pro League will be former Celtic counterpart Brendan Rodgers, now in charge of Al-Qadsiah. Their renewed rivalry adds another intriguing storyline to the title race.
On the announcement graphic, Al Nassr quoted Postecoglou directly: "At all my previous clubs, it ends the same. With me and a trophy." It was a deliberate echo of the line he made famous at Tottenham, this time directed at a fanbase expecting nothing less.
