Valencia are closing in on the appointment of Javier Aguirre as their new manager as negotiations with the former Mexico boss are reportedly in their final stages.
Aguirre had been available after leaving his role as Mexico's national team coach following the World Cup. His nation co-hosted the tournament and advanced to the Round of 16 before suffering a 3-2 defeat to England in a classic at the Azteca.
The 67-year-old is one of world football's most experienced tacticians having traveled the globe to manage clubs and international teams. He previously time in charge of Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol and Mallorca.
Valencia Close to Appointing Javier Aguirre
Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto confirmed Valencia are set to confirm Aguirre as their new manager. He wrote on X:
"Everything is confirmed just as we had advanced in the last few hours. The parties are in the final phase of processing the documents, and the signatures are about to arrive."
Valencia have moved for Aguirre after sacking Carlos Corberan and their football chief executive Ron Gourlay last week. A winless start to the season led to the duo departing the Mestalla and the higher-ups replaced Gourlay with Braulio Vazquez.
Los Ches sit 19th in the La Liga table after picking up their first win of the campaign last time out. They defeated Alaves 1-0 just two days after Corberan's dismissal.
Ernesto Valverde Turned Down Valencia
Aguirre wasn't the only candidate the Spanish club's hierarchy seemingly had in mind to try and get their season back on track. Vazquez had explored the potential appointment of former Barcelona and Athletic Club boss Ernesto Valverde.
According to Marca, Valverde formally turned down the offer to replace Corberan and the club chose not to proceed with a pursuit. They are now instead set to hand the reins to Aguirre whose experience could be beneficial for a struggling Valencia side.
Aguirre's first game in charge is likely to come away to Racing Santander after the international break. The two sides face one another at the Estadio El Sardinero on October 11th.
