Middlesbrough forward Will Lankshear has caught the attention of Newcastle United ahead of the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old stands out as one of the exciting stars in the Championship this season and his exploits for the Boro are not going unnoticed.

According to Talksport, the Magpies have instructed their scouts to monitor Lankshear who is the leading top scorer in the English second division.

The 21-year-old has scored 13 goals in 13 matches for Middlesbrough who sit atop the Championship standings, and they are the second-highest-scoring team in the league.

Newcastle set sights on Lankshear

Lankshear has made an immediate impact at the Riverside Stadium following his arrival from Tottenham Hotspur in July.

He signed a five-year deal this summer and an early exit from Middlesbrough might be difficult as the club intensify their ambition to return to the Premier League since the 2016-17 season.

The English striker is attracting interest ahead of the transfer window but he is currently in the treatment room and he missed Middlesbrough's last league game against Wrexham in midweek.

The report added that scouts from the England national team and Newcastle United were scheduled to watch Lankshear on Wednesday but he was injured.

Newcastle's interest in the 21-year-old is fuelled by their hunt for a natural striker, having struggled to fill Alexander Isak's void who left for Liverpool in 2025.

Isak's replacement, Nick Woltemade struggled to settle into life at St James' Park after arriving from Germany, and he is currently on loan at Juventus.

Lankshear is not a stranger to the Premier League because he made three league appearances for Tottenham Hotspur in the 2024-25 season and was part of their UEFA Europa League-winning team.

However, he struggled for first-team playing minutes in North London and spent the last two seasons in the Championship, where he played for West Bromwich Albion and Oxford United.
