Given Lukaku's successful spell under Antonio Conte at Inter, his reunion with the Italian coach at Napoli initially looked like the perfect fit. Their history together suggested the Belgian striker would once again play a central role in Conte's system.
Instead, the relationship began to unravel during last season. Tensions reached a breaking point when Lukaku failed to return to Italy following the late-March international break, prompting then-Napoli head coach Conte to push him to the fringes of the squad.
