UEFA has revealed two rule changes it will apply to the Champions League, as well as the Europa League and the Conference League during the 2026-27 season.
Five English teams will feature in the Champions League in the upcoming season, while Paris Saint-Germain are hunting for a third consecutive Champions League title.
Once the final qualifiers are decided, the League Phase draw will take place on August 27 to confirm the eight opponents each team will face, with Matchday 1 starting on September 8.
The final of the Champions League will be held at Atletico Madrid’s Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium on June 5, and teams will have to become accustomed to two new and subtle rule changes.
What UEFA's Two New Rule Changes Mean
Once a player accumulated three yellow cards, they were handed a one-match suspension in previous years of UEFA competitions.
The threshold has now been increased from three to four yellow cards this season before a player receives a one-match ban, with increased games during the League Phase cited as the main reason for this decision.
After serving the first suspension, subsequent bans will be handed to players after every two additional yellow cards.
For teams who already qualified for the knockout stages automatically last term before the final matchday, it was suspected players were keen to incur an early suspension instead of missing out on a more significant fixture in the knockout stages.
Clubs may continue to bear this in mind in order to get the upper hand and avoid key absentees once the knockout stages commence.
Another rule that is being introduced involves the time displayed on big screens in stadiums during matches in the three European competitions.
Although broadcasters were permitted to show the additional time for each half and during extra-time, this was not allowed to be shown in stadiums.
Akin to the Premier League two years ago, UEFA will now implement this change of displaying the additional time, giving fans and players greater clarity during stoppage time.

Could UEFA Introduce More Rule Changes?
An experimental set of new rules were introduced during this year’s FIFA World Cup, including checking that a corner is correctly awarded, reviewing second yellow cards, and players covering their mouths in confrontational situations receiving their marching orders.
UEFA has made their case for opting against the implementation of these rules to protect the game and unnecessary interruptions, but the organisation can still be receptive to altering their standpoint.
Across the English football pyramid, a solution for clamping down on goalkeeper tactical timeouts will be trialled. Managers will be required to tell the fourth official which outfielder to withdraw from proceedings for one minute should their goalkeeper receive treatment and pause play.
Changes should have justification behind them and it remains to be seen if UEFA will follow the same path as domestic leagues and the FIFA World Cup, amid the unstable relationship with the latter.
