Chelsea FC are in talks to sign both Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson in deals which could mark the clearest evidence yet of a change in direction.
Over the last few seasons, Chelsea's ownership, headed up mainly by Clearlake Capital's Behdad Eghbali, have prioritised building a squad full of young and talented players.
However, as is the case in the entirety of Football history, that approach has not led to sustained success on the pitch.
While the Blues have had some good moments, namely winning the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025, there has been a distinct lack of stability across the pitch, with high player churn and a lack of proven footballing reference points for the young squad to look toward when adversity hits on the pitch.
This summer, Chelsea, after long and detailed discussions with Xabi Alonso, Liam Rosenior and others, plus a barrage of their own evidence, have decided to adapt their model and target not just more proven players on the pitch, but a certain type of character off it, too.
Why Is This Happening?
Before we delve into sourced background details, it must be simply recognised that the main reason that a shift in strategy is taking place is due to one reason and one reason only: poor results. The youth-led strategy has not provided the consistency required at an elite club like Chelsea.
Are Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson the types of quality, ready-made, experienced leaders I was pointing out privately for years that Chelsea's young squad needed? Perhaps not, as I am a firm believer that Chelsea need clear reference points on the pitch, rather than motivational speeches off it, but there is at least a recognition, finally, that the daily standards at Cobham and results in the Premier League come from more than just talent in your feet.
Something needed to change at Chelsea; the club have finished in 12th, 6th, 4th and 10th since the new ownership took over in 2022. The hope is that with more ready-made signings on the pitch, such as Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix, coupled with guides off it, the club will start to see more consistent performances during matches.
The Background Details
The adaptation has been a long time coming. The first instance of wanting more proven, ready-made players and leaders came with Frank Lampard, who was understood to be shocked at the culture of the club upon his return as interim manager in 2023.
Lampard was understood to feel that there was a lack of daily standard setters at Cobham, something which Jordan Henderson in particular will attempt to help with, should he join the club.
Mauricio Pochettino followed, and while there was at times some exciting football on the pitch, Chelsea's squad was still viewed as immature, inexperienced and not ready to compete for the biggest prizes in the Argentinian's view, ultimately falling out with the hierarchy over strategy and leaving by mutual consent after just one season.
Enzo Maresca was more of a believer in profiles over intangibles, and to his credit, did achieve success in comparison to the others before him, but that is not to say he did not express or find issues with certain players, such as Nicolas Jackson, who was infamously sent off away to Newcastle during the back end of the 2024-25 season when the Blues were chasing a top five finish, and then again in the Club World Cup.
Immaturity problems extended in moments during Maresca's second season, where he was seen to be furious with Liam Delap after getting sent off in a matter of minutes for a deliberate elbow away to Wolves in the Carabao Cup. Maresca labelled the red card 'very stupid'.
Maresca's departure from the club led to several key players holding talks with the sporting leadership team last season over what needed to change, and as well as Marc Cucurella's public interview, it is understood that former head coach Liam Rosenior also advised on what he had seen in training and matches, with a lack of maturity, inability to deal with adversity and quiet leaders amongst red flags raised during several meetings throughout last season, and upon his departure after being sacked.
While Rosenior was not a top-level coach, he was a former player and an excellent communicator and explainer, and this was understood to extend to board level in conversations over transfer business.
There were multiple games and instances when his team seemed to give up and lose belief after a shift in momentum, whether during a match or after a goal. Rosenior tried every approach, encouraging, forgiving, and eventually anger, to no avail.
Alonso has further reinforced the belief in a change in approach, and at this point, the higher-ups have already seen enough evidence themselves to conclude that an adaptation of the model is required to mark an evolution in the project.
It is understood that Alonso wants talented players, but also characters behind the scenes who can set daily standards at Cobham.
The model is not permanently changing, but more of an adaptation which will still rely on sales each summer in order to offset spending during an era of financial rules and other big six clubs generating more revenue than Chelsea.

While Danny Welbeck's leadership and veteran experience on the pitch are nothing to be laughed at, the potential addition of Jordan Henderson in particular could prove to be a difference-maker off it.
Much was made of Henderson being selected for England's World Cup campaign this summer, but new Chelsea signing Morgan Rogers and Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham publicly stressed how important he was to the group.
Speaking to England's official YouTube channel, Rogers said that Henderson is "the best guy he has ever come across in football."
Bellingham remarked that Henderson makes everyone laugh, but most importantly, directly addresses issues between players or problems that younger players may face in Football.
Jurgen Klopp had Henderson as captain for several years at Liverpool, winning both the Premier League and Champions League together, and upon his departure from the club in 2023, stated: "Top-class professional, top bloke and a really, really, really good player. That's what you need to be if you want to play that long for Liverpool."
Virgil Van Dijk, who took over the reins as Liverpool captain following Henderson's departure, said in a 2022 Nike Documentary: "If any young player wants to follow an example, it should be him. He is a fantastic leader who everyone respects so much at Liverpool, and I’m very happy that he is my captain… He has been putting the team before himself for years… There is so much responsibility on the pitch and off the pitch: you have to think about everyone else before you get to yourself and Hendo is very skilled at that."
Players at Chelsea who put the team before themselves will be vital to success. Alonso himself said that in his first interview with Chelsea's club website.
With the additions of Welbeck and Henderson, Alonso is looking for mentors and guides for the regular starters. It is, after all, not just what you have on the pitch, but what you have off it.
