After helping Arsenal lift the UEFA Women's Champions League and playing a crucial role in England's successful defence of the European Championship, Chloe Kelly believes this summer has given her exactly what she needed.

The Arsenal forward admits last season did not unfold as she had hoped after injuries disrupted much of her first full campaign back in North London.

But after months of hard work away from the spotlight, Kelly says she is now ready to attack the new season with renewed confidence.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the Lionesses star reflected on the challenges she has faced, her journey back to Arsenal and why she feels she is now in the best possible place heading into another huge campaign.

"I Think I Needed This Summer"

Kelly's return to Arsenal in January 2025 marked the end of a difficult spell at Manchester City, where limited opportunities eventually led her to publicly state that she wanted to leave the club.

Although returning to the club where she spent part of her youth career brought excitement, she admits there was also uncertainty.

"It was a bit of a fear of the unknown, I reflect on that period as a dark moment but one where I learned a lot about myself," Kelly said.

Since then, her fortunes have changed dramatically.

She helped the club win the UEFA Women's Champions League before once again delivering for England on the biggest stage, converting the decisive penalty as the Lionesses retained the European Championship.

Despite those unforgettable moments, Kelly admits she was left frustrated by an injury-hit 2025-26 campaign that limited her opportunities in the Women's Super League.

"I had big goals to do amazing things at Arsenal in my first full season and I was a little disappointed I wasn't able to," she said.

"I think I needed this summer to work on myself physically, balancing working in the gym, on the pitch and getting downtime.

"I am in a really good place at the moment. My main goal is to stay fit and fresh all season and be ready when called upon."

Chloe Kelly Opens Up About Confidence And Life Beyond Football

The 28-year-old has become known for playing with confidence and personality.

From celebrating England's Euro 2022 triumph to producing big moments throughout her international career, she has built a reputation one of women's football's biggest personalities.

However, she admits that what supporters see on the pitch does not always reflect how she feels away from it.

"In moments where I'm confident, I'll show it, but that's not always the case," she explained.

"In other moments, I need a little arm around the shoulder."

Her honesty highlights the reality many elite athletes experience, where confidence can fluctuate despite success at the highest level.

How Arsenal Are Preparing For Another Trophy Challenge

Arsenal head into the new season with significant changes to their squad.

Experienced players Beth Mead and Katie McCabe have moved on, while the club has strengthened with several high-profile additions, including Spain international Ona Batlle and England midfielder Georgia Stanway.

The arrivals underline Arsenal's determination to compete for every major honour after lifting the Women's Champions League, and Kelly believes helping new teammates settle is just as important as what happens on the pitch.

"I just try to be a good person, welcome the players and make sure they feel comfortable in our environment," she said.

"I like to take the time with them and really embrace their culture."

Off the pitch, though, life remains simple.

"I'm not really a social butterfly outside of training," Kelly added. "I like going home and seeing my family and my dogs."

Kelly's Focus Is On Staying Fit And Helping Arsenal

With the FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil on the horizon next year, it would be easy for Kelly to look too far ahead.

Instead, her attention remains firmly on Arsenal.

Her priority is staying fit, contributing goals and assists, and helping Renee Slegers' side challenge for domestic and European honours once again.

After overcoming one of the toughest periods of her career, Kelly believes the foundations have now been laid for a fresh start.

And if this summer has given her the physical and mental reset she was searching for, Arsenal supporters will hope one of England's biggest match-winners is ready to make an even bigger impact in the season ahead.
