Aston Villa have announced plans to take legal action against Jamie Carragher over comments directed at the club and its supporters.
In a statement posted on X on 30 October and signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, Villa accused the Sky Sports and CBS pundit of making "unacceptable insults".
The announcement follows Carragher's remarks on the Stick to Football podcast, where he questioned whether Unai Emery would turn down the opportunity to manage Manchester United.
Carragher's comments angered Villa supporters, particularly his claim that the club would never reach United's stature.
What Jamie Carragher Said About Aston Villa And Unai Emery
The controversy began with a discussion about Emery's potential interest in the Manchester United job if Michael Carrick leaves Old Trafford.
Carragher had previously described Emery as the best manager in the Premier League during an appearance on Sky Sports. He argued that the Spaniard would want the opportunity to prove himself at a bigger club and compete in the Champions League.
He returned to the subject during the Stick to Football podcast, pointing to Emery's spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, which he felt had not gone as planned. He also suggested that dressing-room egos could have played a part in those experiences.
Carragher then explained how he views football's hierarchy, using Real Madrid's signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United as an example of bigger clubs recruiting players from their rivals.
He also told Villa supporters to "shut the f*** up", adding: "Aston Villa will never be Manchester United."
The remarks drew criticism from Villa fans, prompting Carragher to defend himself on social media.
He described the comment as a joke made in response to the reaction he had received and pointed to his previous praise of Emery and the club, including their Europa League triumph in Istanbul.
Those responses came before Villa announced its intention to take legal action.
What Aston Villa's Legal Action Statement Confirms
The statement is two sentences long. The first says the club will take legal action against Carragher over “unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans”. The second makes clear that Villa will not allow anyone to stand in the way of its progress in English and European football.
Sawiris has been part of the club’s ownership group since its 2018 takeover.
The statement did not identify the specific remarks, nor did it explain the legal basis for the action or mention a court or law firm.
Why Emery And Manchester United Are Part OF The Row
The disagreement comes amid speculation over Carrick's position at Manchester United and who could replace him if the club decides to make a managerial change. Emery has emerged as a potential candidate for the role, although the Villa manager has remained committed to his project at the club.
Carragher's comments added to the speculation, suggesting that the opportunity to manage United could appeal to the Spaniard. Villa's recent success also helps explain the strength of the reaction from supporters.
Emery guided the club to a 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul on 20 May 2026, securing his fifth title in the competition and ending Villa's 30-year wait for a major trophy.
The achievement further strengthened Emery's standing at Villa, making suggestions that he could leave for Manchester United a sensitive subject among supporters.
For now, Villa's next steps on the legal issue remain undisclosed. The dispute has moved beyond the original debate about Emery's future, with the club now taking issue with Carragher's comments about its standing and supporters.
