La Liga leaders Barcelona have begun the search to replace Alejandro Balde in the January transfer window as he appears to be out of Hansi Flick's plans.

According to Get FootballNews Spain, the Blaugrana are scouting for left-footed centre-backs to strengthen their defence.

Balde has endured a tough start to the season with only substitute appearances so far.

He has made four appearances in all competitions this season, including three La Liga outings.

On Saturday, the Barcelona Academy graduate replaced Joao Cancelo or the final 28 minutes as Flick's team cruised to a 6-1 win against Alaves.

Balde seeking greener pastures after Barcelona drop

Balde has descended from an influential player at Barcelona to a fifth-choice full-back.

The Catalans now consider the 23-year-old as being surplus to requirements and are reportedly looking to cash in on him in January.

Balde's potential exit is seen as an opportunity for Hansi Flick to make more defensive signings in the upcoming transfer window, with Pedro Porro and Lisandro Martinez reported to be at the top of Barcelona's wishlist.

Balde, meanwhile, is not without suitors with Manchester United and Benfica reportedly interested in his signing.

The left-back still has two years left in his contract and he is reportedly valued at around €40 million.

Balde hailed as incredible talent

Despite his recent struggle for adequate playing minutes, Balde was once described as an incredible talent because of his defensive qualities.

The Spain international was named in La Liga Team of the Year for the 2022-23 season for his outstanding contribution to Barcelona's title triumph.

Former Osasuna defender Juan Cruz, who once played against Balde in La Liga, described his fellow countryman as a great full-back despite injury struggles.

“He has shown what he is. He’s had an injury but he’s had an incredible career, he’s been incredible, how he goes on the attack! He’s a great full-back," Cruz was quoted by Barca Universal.
