The decision over which country to represent is often trivialised by outsiders, but Nicolo Tresoldi's dilemma has provided a bit of an insight into what goes on in dual-national players' heads.

The Club Brugge striker is eligible to represent Germany and Italy at senior international level, but has declined to commit to either at senior level, asking for time to make his decision.

Still only 22, Tresoldi wishes to conclude this stage of his Germany U-21 career by participating in the 2027 U-21 European Championship before settling on his long-term international allegiance.

Germany U-21 international Nicolo Tresoldi has revealed that spoken with Germany head coach Jurgen Klopp and Italy head coach Roberto Mancini.

The 22-year-old told Sky Germany that he feels conflicted as both countries mean a lot to him.

He said that he is proud to represent Germany at youth level, and wishes to play for them in the U-21 Euros before deciding.

"My heart is 50/50. Both countries mean a lot to me.

"I wear the Germany jersey with pride, I'm very happy to be here. I want to play in the European Championship here. After that, we'll see what happens next."

Tresoldi also revealed that Klopp has approached him for talks, and he explained his situation to the Germany coach, who has left the door open for him.

"We had good talks. I explained my situation to Klopp, and he understood. He's a great guy. It wasn't a typical coach-player conversation, but more like a father-son talk.

"He said that the door is always open for me."

He also spoke with Italy coach Mancini, relaying the same information he gave to Klopp to the Italian tactician.

"I said the same thing to him as I did to Klopp," he revealed.

Tresoldi is with the Germany U-21 team for this month's qualifiers for the 2027 U-21 Euros.

Nicolo Tresoldi's Rise From Hannover 96 to Club Brugge

Born in Sardinia to an Italian father and Argentine mother, Nicolo Tresoldi grew up in Italy before moving to Germany as a 13-year-old.

Upon arriving in Germany, he joined the youth team of Hannover 96 and impressed in various age groups before signing a first professional contract in January 2022.

He made his professional debut for the club in July of the same year and went on to make 80 appearances, scoring 14 goals.

In 2022, he received his first invitation to play for Germany at U-19 level, and he has remained an option for the country since.

He left Hannover to join Club Brugge in the summer of 2025 and scored 19 league goals in 40 appearances in his debut campaign in Belgium.

Tresoldi's form caught the eye of then-Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, with the youngster reportedly coming into consideration for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

His form at Club Brugge attracted interest from several clubs during the summer window, but he opted to remain with Club Brugge for at least one more season.

With Tresoldi developing as a centre-forward and both countries monitoring their attacking options, Tresoldi's eventual decision will determine which national team he represents at senior level.
