Olympique Marseille set an unwanted record in Ligue 1 on Sunday after losing 2-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in Le Classique showdown.

Second-half goals from Ferran Torres and Marquinhos powered PSG to victory at the Velodrome as Angel Gomes' equaliser was not enough to salvage a point for the hosts.

Marseille dropped to 17th in the league table with just three points after five matches, and they are just a point above bottom-placed Le Havre.

It is the first time the Olympians have found themselves in the relegation zone since the 2011-12 campaign and they ended that season in the 10th position.

ENRIQUE: MARSEILLE WILL IMPROVE UNDER GENESIO

Sunday's result against PSG means Marseille have now suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions, putting Bruno Genesio under mounting pressure.

Genesio moved to the south of France in the summer after guiding Lille to a third-place finish last season and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

Amid Marseille's false start in the Ligue 1, Enrique throws his weight behind Genesio as the best man to lead the club out of its 'special situation'.

"It is a special situation for OM, especially given how they started last year," Enrique said in his press conference as covered by Striver.

"I think Genesio came into the coaching job with a lot of experience. He'll help the team improve their performance.

"I'm confidence, of course. That's football; it's a difficult position to be in when you are coaching a team of this caliber.

"There is pressure, but I think with Bruno Genesio, they will definitely improve."

Last season, Marseille defeated PSG 1-0 at the Velodrome thanks to Marquinhos' own goal and they managed to finish in the fifth position to qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

UNDERSTANDING OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE'S SITUATION

Olympique Marseille find themselves in an uncertain financial crisis with limited power to strengthen its squad since Genesio's arrival.

The Olympians are the only team in the French Ligue 1 that did not make any signings in the summer after losing key players like Mason Greenwood, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Geronimo Rulli, Facundo Medina and Quinten Timber.

Genesio has been forced to dig into the club's youth system for additional power, with the likes of Tadjidine Mmadi, Keyliane Abdallah and Nouhoum Kamissoko getting playing minutes.

Meanwhile, the situation with Marseille's squad depth appears to be deteriorating, with regular players Geoffrey Kondogbia, Igor Paixao and Tochukwu Nnadi currently on the sidelines with injuries and it is unknown if they will be back in time after the international break.

Olympique Marseille will return to action with a trip to 16th-placed Troyes on October 11, followed by their first Europa League home game against Olympiacos at the Velodrome on October 15.

BRUNO GENESIO TO MEEET MARSEILLE LEADERSHIP

Despite the pause in club games, it will be a busy international window in Marseille with Genesio set to have crucial meetings with his backroom staff and the club leadership.

The 60-year-old is clearly frustrated with the string of poor results and he accepts responsibility as manager of the team.

"It's funny, everyone keeps wishing me good luck," Genesio said. "I'm a coach, obviously we're tied to performances and results, especially in a club like OM.

"It's not enough, I take my share of responsibility, just as others will have to take theirs too.

"For now, I'm not at that point; I'm going to digest this defeat, talk with my staff, talk with my bosses. Because I think, choosing my words carefully, that it's not normal for OM to be in this situation."

The crucial meeting would likely begin this week with Olympique Marseille's American owner, Frank McCourt spotted at the Velodrome during the loss to PSG.
