Tottenham Hotspur are considering options to extend James Maddison's contract and commit his future to the club.
The England international has returned to top form this campaign after his 2025-26 season was cut short by a knee injury that kept him out of action for seven months.
The 29-year-old has made himself a key player at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since his signing from Leicester City in 2023.
Maddison's current deal is expected to run out in June 2028 but Tottenham are exploring options to ward off transfer interest for the attacking midfielder.
Tottenham advised on Maddison's future
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has advised Tottenham to consider a bonus approach in Maddison's new contract if they plan to keep him beyond 2028.
Wyness disclosed that an appearance-based contract would be more beneficial and economical for a player who has struggled with recurring injuries lately.
Maddison recently recovered from a groin injury and he was an unused substitute in Spurs' 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in Saturday's Premier League outing.
"I talked to a sports science expert the other day who said it's quite common to have groin issues after an ACL because your body's overcompensating, and so injuries will recur," Wyness told Football Insider.
"I think Spurs have probably three things they've got to think about with Maddison right now. Do they move to a heavily appearance-based contract?
"Because there's no doubt they like him as a character, the fans like him, and he's still got some magic. So can they do that if they're going to keep him on the books?
"Secondly, do they sell him in the summer? That's going to be when he's still got some value left, and you know, he can still do a job for somebody else. Or do they lose him for free in 2028 and just let him carry on right now?
"Those are the three options. I think right now I'd be moving to number one."
Maddison has played a part in helping Tottenham overturn their disappointing start to the season with a goal in six Premier League games so far.
De Zerbi's side are now comfortable in the top half of the Premier League table as they sit eighth with 12 points from nine matches.
